Patient Guide for Ultrasound Imaging Diagnostics

Welcome to our guide on preparing for your upcoming ultrasound imaging diagnostics. Ultrasound imaging, or sonography, is a safe and non-invasive procedure that uses sound waves to produce images of the inside of your body. It helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. Below, you’ll find a comprehensive guide to help you understand and prepare for your ultrasound exam.

Before Your Ultrasound

Scheduling and Questions

  • Appointment: Ensure you have the date, time, and location of your ultrasound appointment. If you have any scheduling conflicts, contact our office as soon as possible.
  • Medical History: Be prepared to provide information regarding your medical history, current medications, and any specific symptoms you are experiencing.
  • Preparation Instructions: Follow any specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider or our staff. These may vary depending on the type of ultrasound being performed.

Dietary and Physical Preparation

  • Fasting: For certain ultrasound exams, such as those of the abdomen, you may be instructed to fast for a specific period (usually 6-8 hours) before your appointment.
  • Hydration: For pelvic ultrasounds, you might be asked to drink water and hold your urine to ensure a full bladder, which improves image quality.
  • Clothing: Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You might be asked to change into a gown.

During Your Ultrasound

Check-in and Comfort

  • Arrival: Arrive at least 15 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork.
  • Communication: If you have concerns about the procedure or your comfort, don’t hesitate to communicate with the sonographer performing the exam.

The Procedure

  • You will be guided to lie down on an examination table. The part of your body being examined will need to be exposed while the rest remains covered.
  • A water-based gel will be applied to the area; this helps conduct the sound waves.
  • The sonographer will move a device called a transducer over the skin. You may feel slight pressure but generally no discomfort.
  • During the exam, you might be asked to change positions or hold your breath briefly.

After Your Ultrasound

Post-Procedural Instructions

  • There are generally no special precautions you need to take after an ultrasound. You can resume your normal activities immediately.
  • The sonographer typically cannot give you results directly. The images will be reviewed by a radiologist and then sent to your doctor, who will discuss the findings with you.

Follow-Up

  • Ensure you have a follow-up appointment or know when to expect a call with your results.
  • If any additional tests are recommended, make sure you understand when and how these will be scheduled.
